Carlos Flores
![]() Carlos Flores is a Chicago artist (photographer, musician, writer) who has been involved in Chicago's Afro-Latino music scene for over three decades. He was one of the founders of Chicago's Afro-Caribbean Music Society and the Puerto Rican Arts Alliance. From 1994-1997, Mr. Flores served as the Program Coordinator of Project Kalinda at the Center for Black Music Research at Columbia College; the project examined the relationships and influence of Black music in the Americas. In 1998 he established the Chicago Puerto Rican Cuatro Festival, an ongoing festival celebrating the folkloric music of Puerto Rico.
He has served as consultant and collaborator with prestigious local art and cultural institutions like the Jazz Institute of Chicago, Chicago Symphony Orchestra Community Advisory Committee, African Festival of the Arts, Auditorium Theater, the Chicago Historical Society, and others. He has also served as a contributor to the 848 Program on the local Chicago Public Radio Station WBEZ-FM 91.5.
He has written various articles on Latino arts and culture that have been published in the CENTRO Journal, published by the Center of Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College in New York; DIALOGO Magazine (Latino Research Center at DePaul University); and KALINDA Newsletter (Center for Black Music Research at Columbia College Chicago). His latest work was published in the Spring 2004 issue of the CENTRO Journal where he wrote an article (along with his photographs) entitled "Five Decades of the Puerto Rican Music in Chicago: A Personal Recollection." This essay documents the development and history of Puerto Rican music, venues, and musicians in Chicago.
Mr. Flores has also launched his own website by the name of puertoricanchicago.com.
