Leo Negrón "El Coquero"
Leo Negron
Leo Negrón was born in Chicago’s Humboldt Park community in 1969. From a very young age, he began doodling after being inspired by his uncle’s pencil sketches. Fascinated by his uncle’s technique, the young artist began trying to emulate those drawings. He experimented with Disney and Marvel Comic characters and cartoons in general. As a teenager he drew graffiti art.
Leo is a very involved artist with an array of different scopes of art. For the last couple of years, Negrón has work with the Puerto Rican Arts Alliance on The Taíno Project. He has been involved in several different workshops teaching the form of making-mask, such as the vejigante mask, clay relief representing the Cemí from the Taíno culture and the basic fundamentals of painting on canvas and or paper. Many of his artwork is displayed through the Puerto Rican Community such as Nelly’s Restaurant on Division Street.
Today Leo uses his artistic pride to share with others. The most satisfying aspect of his artwork is to be able to share the historical and cultural aspect of his pieces. He gets to educate and equally important, reinforce his identity. Leo currently uses the coconut as his medium. He carves cultural designs that represent something from his culture and ancestry as a Puerto Rican. Very rarely will he reproduce pieces making each one more unique. Leo is the original "Coquero" from Chicago making mugs, mosaic coconut art pieces, framed coconut pieces, jewelry and more.
