Luis M. Ortiz
![]() Luis M. Ortiz, a native from Puerto Rico, born in Rio Piedras, his family moved to Chicago when he was 3 year's old, visiting his beloved Isla de Puerto Rico on a numerous occations. He has a passion for the arts and expresses himself through his work using different mediums. Luis experience in art varies from working with jesso (a form of plaster), watercolors, oils, pastels, acrylics, tiles, pottery, paper maché and much more.
Luis attended Columbia College in 1987. During the same year, the artist created "Exploradores del Yunque", which he taught art during the summer. This particular program was established at El Yunque Bookstore with the purpose of exposing the community to Puerto Rican culture.
This outstanding artist wears many hats, he has worked as an art consultant for the Chicago Board of Education, served as a judge for elementary and high school students artwork competitions, and has also implemented and directed art programs with John Allen, Director of Art Programs.
Luis received recognition for his community service from Latin United Community Housing Association (LUCHA) and in June 2001, the artist was elected as a Board Member for the organization, serving also as Secretary and on Dec '03 he was elected President of the Board.
Luis Ortiz is an involved community artist, seeing the need for an organization to assist artists to exhibit and display their artwork, in December 2005, he created 'The Greater Humboldt Park Fine Arts Council". A non for profit organization with the purpose of providing opportunities that will promote educational and cultural activities within the Greater Humboldt Park Community area and increase awareness and appreciation of the arts through a variety of artist disciplines including, but not limited to, dance, literature, storytelling, music, theater, visual and media arts.
Luis's involvement with the Puerto Rican Arts Alliance include The Three Kings Workshop at selected Chicago Public Schools where he has taught students the art of canvas and rock painting, the Palmer Square Boulevard Arts Festival and his most recent endeavor at the Children's Museum Art 2006 — Play with the Arts.
