The Taíno Project 2005 — Lectures & Workshops
Lectures
Part of the larger project, Hablando Taíno is a community and university lecture series, undertaken by the PRAA in the Spring of 2005, highlighting Taíno culture and its influence in contemporary Caribbean and diaspora cultures. In recent years a revival of ancient heritage has become common throughout the world, in many cases related to a process of balkanization of cultural and ethnic groups. The multiple organizations that fall under the rubric of Taíno Nations tend to claim that the influence of this culture has been not only on selected traditions, but that the culture and the actual people have survived today in many family traditions throughout the Caribbean. The PRAA proposes to delve further, with the Chicago community, into contemporary discourse surrounding many Taíno legacies. In the process of delving into this discourse, the PRAA is conscious of the need to examine movements with thoughtful analysis, presenting diverse and critical perspectives. With this year's student workshops already underway, the PRAA seeks to nurture a cross-pollination of the dialogues fostered by this lecture series with ongoing development of contemporary curricula for future generations to better understand Taíno legacies in the Caribbean and beyond.
